Mermaid Abby loves to go on adventures, but she spends so much time with her head in the kelp that she's forgotten what's most important. But everything changes when the Sea Witch kidnaps Abby's sister, Zoe. Using her wits and courage, Abby must confront the Sea Witch to save her family or they'll be lost to her forever.
About the Story
I told this story to my niece Abby in October of 2020. Abby was just about to turn 3, and she very much enjoyed oral stories over having books read to her. I didn't feel super confident in my ability to tell stories out loud because, up until that point, I'd only written my stories down. But once I started, I found it was a lot easier than I thought.
Admittedly, I am a published author with a master of fine arts in creative writing and a master of arts in mass communication, so I'm pretty familiar with story structure, and I've read a lot of stories. I especially enjoy fairytales, and I've found that Abby does too.
The idea of an adventurous little mermaid was definitely influenced by Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid, as well as the Disney adaptation, but I made it my own by shifting the focus from the mermaid's selfish desires for love and attention to her selfless need to protect her family from a mistake she made.
